Consult the following manuals for specific information: DECmate II o DECmate II Installation Guide o DECmate II Hard Disk Subsystem Documentation o DECmate II Owner's Manual DECmate III Plus o DECmate III Plus System Kit The DECmate Master Menu Software Installation Guide only describes how to install Master Menu software on a hard disk. You should refer to the Master Menu User's Guide for instructions on how to use Master Menu with your DECmate system. vii INTRODUCTION ______________________________________________________________________ The DECmate Master Menu Software installation Guide explains how to install Master Menu software on a DECmate system with a hard disk. The instructions in this book can be used on the following DECmate systems: o DECmate II DECmate II system, including monitor, keyboard, system unit with dual diskette drives, and the DECmate II hard disk subsystem installed. o DECmate III Plus DECmate III Plus system, including monitor, keyboard, and system unit with one diskette drive and one hard disk. Master Menu is installed using only one diskette drive. This is the default diskette drive on the DECmate system. On a DECmate II this is the uppermost drive; on a DECmate III Plus this is the only diskette drive. Throughout this book, the default diskette drive is called drive 0. Other operating systems, such as CP/M and MS-DOS, use letters instead of numbers for device assignments. For example, the default diskette drive is always assigned the letter A. Other documentation may refer to the default diskette drive as drive 0/A or just drive A. Difference Between DECmate II and DECmate III Plus Diskette Drive Operations The main difference between DECmate II and DECmate III Plus hardware is the diskette drive used on each system: o The DECmate II uses an RX50 dual diskette drive. There are two diskette drive doors. The hard disk subsystem is optional. o The DECmate III Plus uses an RX33 diskette drive. There is one diskette drive with a lock. The RD31 hard disk comes with the system. Figure 1-1 shows a DECmate II system with RX50 dual diskette drive and the hard disk subsystem installed. Note that the RX50 diskette drives are opened by pressing on the top or bottom of the diskette drive doors. 1-1 INTRODUCTION ______________________________________________________________________ Figure 1-1 not included in this document. ASD-522 Figure 1-1 RX50 Diskette Drive Doors on DECmate II System Figure 1-2 shows a DECmate III Plus system with the RX33 diskette drive and the RD31 hard disk. Note that the RX33 diskette drive is opened by turning a lock. Figure 1-2 not included in this document. ASD-871 Figure 1-2 RX33 Diskette Drive Lock on DECmate III Plus System Conventions Used to Describe Diskette Drive Operations This book uses the term diskette drive door to refer to both the diskette drive door on the RX50 and the lock on the RX33. When you are instructed to open the diskette drive door, follow the correct procedure for your system: DECmate II Press the top of the diskette drive door. The door springs open. DECmate III Plus Turn the diskette lock up. When you are instructed to close the diskette drive door, follow the correct procedure for your system: DECmate II Press the bottom of the diskette drive until it closes. DECmate III Plus Turn the diskette lock down. You must have a diskette in the drive before you turn down the lock. 1-2 INTRODUCTION ______________________________________________________________________ Special Function Keys Figure 1-3 shows the DECmate keyboard with two function keys highlighted. Figure 1-3 not included in this document. ASD-232 Figure 1-3 CANCEL and MAIN SCREEN Keys on the DECmate Keyboard The two keys shaded on the DECmate keyboard (CANCEL and MAIN SCREEN) in Figure 1-3 are keys Master Menu uses that may not be familiar to you: CANCEL The CANCEL key (F8) lets you cancel an operation, function, utility, or menu screen. MAIN The MAIN SCREEN key (F9) allows you to display the previous SCREEN menu screen after you complete an operation. For a complete discussion of all the other keys on the DECmate keyboard, refer to the DECmate Owner's Manual for your system. Required Software You need the following software to install Master Menu on a formatted hard disk: o Master Menu Install diskette A o Master Menu Install diskette B After you install Master Menu, on the hard disk, you can install the following software: o DECmate WPS (Word Processing System). version 2.2 or higher. Refer to the book Installation Guide for WPS and DECspell (1) for instructions on installing DECmate WPS on the hard disk. ______________________________________________________________________ (1) DECmate/DECspell software uses the Houghton Mifflin dictionary, copyrighted by Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston, Massachusetts. 1-3 INTRODUCTION ______________________________________________________________________ Handling Diskettes Follow these precautions when you handle diskettes: o Handle diskettes carefully, holding them on the edges or corners, much as you would a stereo record. o NEVER touch the read/write openings with your fingers. o Keep diskettes in their paper envelopes when they are not in use. o Do not attempt to clean diskettes by wiping them with a cloth. You will ruin the magnetic surface. o Write on labels before you affix them to a diskette. If you must write on a label already on a diskette use a felt-tip pen. Do not use ballpoint pens, and never use a pencil. o Keep diskettes away from direct sunlight or high temperatures. Store them in a cool, dry place. o Keep diskettes away from the video monitor, magnets, tools, phone, or electric motors. 1-4 2 ______________________________________________________________________ INSTALLING MASTER MENU Once you have formatted your hard disk, use the following procedure to install Master Menu on the hard disk using Master Menu Install diskettes A and B. This procedure differs from the one described in the Master Menu User's Guide because you must use the original (master) copy of the Master Menu Install diskettes. You cannot make backup copies until Master Menu has been installed. Refer to Chapter 3, "Backup Diskette to Diskette With Master Menu," for instructions on making backup copies of original (master) software after you install Master Menu. INSTALLING MASTER MENU 1 If necessary, turn the DECmate system OFF. Open the diskette drive door(s) and make sure all drive(s) are empty. 2 Press the system unit power switch to the ON (1) position. 3 Immediately insert the Master Menu Install diskette A into drive 0. If your diskette drive has a colored bar on the drive, make sure the arrow on the diskette lines up with the colored bar Close the diskette drive door. OR If you already have Master Menu, you can start up the new Master Menu Install diskette A from the existing Master Menu by pressing SET-UP and then REMOVE. Insert Master Menu Install diskette A into drive 0, and close the door. Press DO. NOTE: If you do not insert the DECmate Master Menu Install diskette A immediately, the system will boot the startup volume of Master Menu that is already established on your hard disk (if one exists). Press MAIN SCREEN. This key is Function Key 9 (F9), located in the uppermost row of gray function keys. 10 When the Master Menu Install Diskette Menu appears, installation is complete. Do not select any other options except QUIT until you make a backup copy of the Master Menu Installation diskettes A and B, as described in the next section. 11 Use the ^ or v keys to select QUIT and press DO. | | OR Enter QUIT and press DO. The DECmate Set Up Screen appears. 12 Press REMOVE, located on the Arrow Keypad. Open drive door 0, and remove Master Menu diskette A. Press DO. The DECmate system starts itself and displays the Master Menu Date/Time screen. Once you have installed Master Menu on the hard disk, you should make backup copies of the installation diskettes, as described in the next chapter. When you complete the backup, store the original (master) copies and use the backup copies and repeat steps 1 to 3 to redisplay the Master Menu Install Menu. You can then select and use other menu items (Set Master password, List volume passwords, Mark a bad block) as described in the Master Menu User's Guide. 2-4 3 ______________________________________________________________________ BACKUP DISKETTE TO DISKETTE WITH MASTER MENU The D Option (Backup diskette to diskette) is a new Master Menu utility that makes backup copies of diskettes. The D option is found in the Hard Disk Services menu, as shown in Figure 3-1. The D option transfers a complete copy from one diskette to another diskette using a single diskette drive (drive 0). The D option is similar to backup in WPS, and can be used to make working copies of any diskette, including WPS document diskettes. Use the D option to make backup copies of software installation diskettes, or to make copies of other diskettes from Master Menu. The other backup utility in Master Menu (B -- Backup Volume(s) to diskettes) transfers the contents of a hard disk volume onto a diskette in drive 0. The B option is used primarily for backups of hard disk volumes. Unlike the D option, the B option does not make workable copies. For example, WPS cannot read data from diskettes backed up with the B option; you must use the R (Restore a volume from diskette) Option in Master Menu before WPS can read the data. Consult Chapter 7, "Hard Disk Services," in the Master Menu User's Guide for instructions on using the B and R options in Master Menu. Backup Installation Diskettes After you install Master Menu you should make backup copies of the original Master Menu Install diskettes A and B. Once this procedure is complete, do not use the original diskettes for installation: always use backup copies. Store the original diskettes in a safe place. At the same time, you should also make backup copies of the WPS Install, WPS System, and WPS Utility diskettes, and any other software you plan to install on the hard disk. Do this before you install the software. The original Master Menu Install diskettes A and B are the only software that cannot be backed up before installation. Use blank diskettes for backups, or use diskettes you are sure you do not want to keep. Remember that the contents of these diskettes will be erased and replaced when you make backups. D - Backup Diskette to Diskette The D Option involves four basic steps: 3-1 BACKUP DISKETTE TO DISKETTE WITH MASTER MENU ______________________________________________________________________ o Insert the diskette to be copied in drive 0. o Copy the contents of the diskette into a temporary storage area on the hard disk. o Remove the diskette to be copied and insert a blank diskette to receive the copy. o Copy the contents of the temporary storage area on the hard disk onto the blank diskette. You need at least one area of 400K bytes free space on your hard disk for the temporary storage area. The 400K bytes must be contiguous, or one complete block of space. If you have 400K bytes free space, but the largest area is less than 400K, the space is not contiguous and the D option will not work. Compress space on the hard disk, or erase a volume you do not want, to create enough contiguous free space and retry the D option. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- |{ Hard Disk Services }| | Screen 1 of 2 Monday 11/10/86 0:00:00 Version 1.2| | | | {L}-- List directory of volumes | | | | A -- Allocate a new volume | | | | E -- Erase an existing volume | | | | B -- Backup Volume(s) to diskettes | | | | D -- Backup diskette to diskette | | | | R -- Restore a volume from diskettes | | | | Q -- Return to Master Menu | | | | | | | | | | | | Select an item using arrow keys or type its tag; then press DO. | | Press NEXT SCREEN for more items. | ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Figure 3-1 The D Option in the Hard Disk Services Menu 3-2 BACKUP DISKETTE TO DISKETTE WITH MASTER MENU ______________________________________________________________________ The following procedure describes how to make backup copies from diskette to diskette using the D option in Master Menu's Hard Disk Services menu. 1 If necessary, turn the DECmate system OFF.
